Ilic continued to explore his earlier fascination with the oscillating energy between the viewer and viewed in ‘Faces Against Glass’.
At first glance, the portraits suggest the subjects are trapped behind an invisible divide, a two-way mirror. Restrained, contained, prevented, their efforts to reach out expose the invisible barrier and we become conscious of ourselves watching. The exchange of vulnerability, closeness and separation across a device’s screen is perhaps a prescient vision of our liberation and entrapment by the social media to come.
